Writing Prompt: Shark Attack

This is my first writing prompt attempt. Let me know what you think. I’m hoping to do at least one a week. I got the writing prompt at Writers Digest

You’re sailing in the ocean with friends when a shark attacks your boat, knocking off your friend who is driving the boat. There are two others on the vessel with you and you have to work with them to quickly save the driver from the water (and being eaten by the shark).

“I’m glad you convinced me to come out Noah.” I looked around loving the calm ocean water, the sun shining like a mirror off it. We had been out for a few hours now, the shore looked like just a dot on the horizon.

Noah smiled at me. “I knew you’d enjoy it.” He turned back to the steering though he had turned off the engine a moment ago, just letting us bob in the water for a bit.

“I think I’m sea sick.” My best friend Emma said coming up from the small room in the bottom of the boat.

I heard laughter behind her and saw her boyfriend, Benjamin walking up behind her. They had been together since high school, Noah was his best friend and we had all been invited to hang out on the boat. I only knew Noah though Benjamin and when I had thought about not coming he had convinced me that it would be fun.  “There goes my convincing you that we need a boat.”

Suddenly the boat rocked hard knocking us around. “What the hell was that?” Noah asked gripping the control panel to help him stand.

“Like I know.” I answered annoyed I had fallen on my ass and it didn’t feel to good right now. Noah was suddenly in front of me and held out a hand helping me up.

He walked over to the side of the boat after I was steady on my feet and looked over. “I don’t see – Shit!” he cut himself off he backed away quickly but not fast enough has the boat rocked again and he tumbled over board. I screamed and ran to the side. Emma screamed behind me, I thought for Noah but when I looked back for help I found her keeling next to Benjamin.

“He hit his head when he fell.” She cried scrambling to find something to put to his head. I could see some blood on his forehead but it wasn’t much so it didn’t seem to be that bad. I turned to look for Noah in the water and was relieved when I saw him bobbing not moving much.

“Come here I’ll help you.” I held out a hand but he didn’t move.

Slowly he looked around him but I didn’t understand what was the matter. “Shark.” He said “I don’t want to move too much I’ll look like a fish.” He was talking quietly like even yelling would make the shark attack him “There is a long poll in the cabin with a hood on the end, go get it.”  I didn’t want to leave him but took off, me standing there wasn’t helping this would. I could see the shark fin when I got back. It terrified me. “Tie one end, not the hook, to the rope on the deck.” I found there was a hole in the end so I threaded the rope though. “Now don’t throw it try to slide it out to me.”

Luckily the sides of the boat weren’t too big but I was not a very strong person. I was at my limit stretching over the railing. The shark wasn’t attacking just swimming back and forth like it was watching. It look big to me. Noah caught the tip of it and curled his fingers firmly. “Emma, help me.” I called not able to look back at her.

“But Benjamin.” She said in a pitiful voice.

“He doesn’t have a shark circling him. There is nothing more you can do for him, help me!” I yelled trying to pull. Noah wasn’t helping. I felt her arms around my waist pulling me back.

He moved slightly. “Kick!” Emma yelled in my ear.

“He can’t he doesn’t want the shark to think he’s a fish.” I answered. “Damn you’re heavy dude.” I complained. We were huffing and puffing. I glanced at where the sharks fin was “um… where did it go?” I asked fear creeping into my voice raising it an octave.

“Crap, pull!” He yelled kicking. He yanked with all our might. His wet and slippery hand clenched mine. I saw a shape just off to his left, a fin grew quickly out of the water, it was coming fast. Noah used my hand and tried to scramble up the side of the boat. Fear made me lean over and grab his shorts band with a great heave he was over the side we both fell back sprawled on the floor of the boat, him on top of me gasping for air. I shoved him off so I could breathe better. The boat rocked again. Noah scrambled up and raced to the steering wheel. The engine roared to life and we were out of there.

We headed back to shore, the whole ordeal had lasted ten or twenty minutes. If felt much longer. Benjamin woke up as we reached the dock wondering why Noah was wet. “I think it will be awhile before I go out again.” I said getting off the boat and smiling weakly at Noah.

“I don’t know what the hell that was, it was so… abnormal. How about I take you to a move next time I want to ask you out.” Noah laughed a little.

I looked up at him. “I didn’t know this was a date, I thought… Emma just said you invited us to hang out.”

He laughed “good, than that was most defiantly not our first date.” He put his arm around my shoulders. “Thanks for saving my life.” I smiled up at him.

“It better be a good date, now you owe me.” He laughed at that squeezing me to his side a little before dropping his arm from around me.
